About the book >.>.> First of all my thanks are due to my colleague at Queen’s College Mr. J. O. Prestwich who read the book in typescript and has given me invaluable advice and guidance together with a great deal of valuable information-far too much indeed for me to acknowledge adequately in the text. I am also especially grateful to Mr. J. Wordsworth of Exeter College and to Mrs. Words- worth for their advice and criticism and to Father Gervase Mathew whose lectures on fourteenth-century literature first interested me in the subject of this book. The Trustees of the British Museum I must thank for permission to reproduce three illustrations from printed books in their care.
