About the book >.>.> HERE is a record of the Bishop officiating in a delightfully Sanctimonious manner at one of the ceremonies which it was the privilege of his holy office to perform. To those skilled in palmistry the strong marking of the “life-line” in his right carry conviction that he died before his time hand will carry while the “Girdle of Venus” gestive. is equally eloquent and sug- Middleton went out to India in 1813 as the first Bishop of Calcutta. Up till then the church there had paid but scant attention to the mundane side of religion but the new Bishop held the strongest views as to the dignity of his Church and station. The monument is thus a true interpretation of the man. A curious mixture of crow and peacock qualities is suggested in the dress and attitude in the contrast between the humility of the kneeling figures and the grandeur of the ecclesiastical pose. He died in 1822 and was buried in his see. Middleton was in several ways an original character. During 1815 he spent many months travelling about India in which time he traversed some 5000 miles but without making a single convert. This may seem usual enough but the point is that he had not even tried to make one-for he was sanguine enough to believe that Christianity would come but could only come-after education. (SP)
