About the book >.>.> Phipps saw an opportunity not only to probe the most central feature distinguishing ancient Andean weaving-the production of cloth with four finished selvages-but also to show how this unique way of looking at weaving continues to influence artists working today more than two and a half millennia after ancient Peruvian weavers first conceived it. We are pleased to include in the exhibition contemporary works by renowned artists Sheila Hicks and James Bassler. Another featured artist who developed an appreciation of four-selvage technology while working in Peru in the 1950s is photographer. musician and ethnomusicologist John Cohen. Phipps has included a selection of Cohen’s beautiful photographs to capture the spirit of the cloth and the women who weave it. Taken together these elements portray not just an unusual way of making cloth but an entire way of thought that remains as cap tivating today as it was in the ceremonial life of ancient Peru. We gratefully acknowledge the support of the Donald Cordry Memorial Fund the Shirley and Ralph Shapiro Director’s Discretionary Fund and the R. L. Shep Endowment for the publication of this book. This volume the twelfth in the Fowler Museum Textile Series is the first to focus on a South American subject and is hopefully a harbinger of more to come reflecting that continent’s rich textile traditions.
