The original limited edition was and still is a tour de force of funda-mental and painstaking research starting with the invention of the pianoforte in France Germany and Italy at the start of the 18th century and tracing the story forward with remarkable lucidity and literary skill. With the original 1933 edition now a scarce collector’s item Dr. Harding has taken the opportunity to prepare a revised and extended new edition which includes all the fruit of her further researches over the past 40 years. Much of the information added is previously unpub-lished including complete listings of European patents. This is a key book on the subject which should be read by all piano enthusiasts.
