About the book >.>.> This Guide sets out to reply to the only question that can be answered with some accuracy the position of the carved stones today. Over the years many have been moved from their original sites and placed in museums for safe- keeping with a number of stones fragments and casts stored or displayed in the National Museums of Scotland at Edinburgh. Others are inside or outside local churches museums in private grounds and stately homes or stand- ing in the open landscape. They are still being found by the plough in excavations or by a pair of sharp eyes at the rate of one or two a year. 1995 was an exceptional year with some twenty important finds. On your journey of discovery remember that these relics are fragile and should not be touched chalked rubbed or polluted in any way. Amazingly many have survived for some 1500 years in spite of weathering deliberate destruc- tion neglect and mutilation by some of our ancestors. A leaflet available from Historic Scotland tells us how best to care for them today. To appreciate them properly first you have to see them. All that I can find are included in this Guide even those which have been recorded in the past but now are lost. If so many have survived how many more must there have once been? How many more are yet to be found? An exciting thought. (LL)
