About the book >.>.> There is no lack of literature on the subject of blacksmiths and farriers but to find any factual information on what they did how they trained and how they ran their business in the rural parish is more difficult. The literature falls into a number of distinct categories. First there are the technical instruction books on how to make a hinge or candlestick (Bealer). From such books it is possible to learn the layout of the forge the tools and equipment used by the blacksmith (Bailey 5/6). In this class too come those books concerned with veterinary medicine (Miles). The second category covers the biographical or autobiographical accounts of individual blacksmiths and their lifetime’s achievement in the craft (Hogg). Such books give a good picture of the life and work as experienced. In addition they add a good measure of gossipy stories about the trade. (LL)
