About the book >.>.> In August 2010 I completed a film’ that begins with a series of captions: ‘A few years ago while dismantling a derelict caravan in the corner of a field a recycling worker found a box containing 19 film cans and a notebook. / Researchers have arranged some of this material as a film narrated by their institution’s co-founder with the title / Robinson in Ruins. / The wandering it describes began on 22 January 2008.’ According to the film’s narrator its footage had been photographed by a wandering erratic scholar on a journey through landscapes in the south of England and the researchers’ institution had been set up some years earlier ‘with the aim of developing novel definitions of economic wellbeing based on the transformative potential we attributed to images of landscape’. While making the film I had hoped that in future I might also arrange the material in other ways and an opportunity to do so was offered by an invitation to devise an exhibit at Tate Britain that would include works from the Tate’s collection. The resulting installation was The Robinson Institute which revisited the journey described by the film combining a selection of its images with historical and other works suggested by their subjects and their fictional cinematographer’s concerns. In this book a similar sequence of images is accompanied by a written commentary. (LL)
