About the book >.>.> The Price Collection is internationally renowned as one of the foremost collections of Edo-period painting. Drawn to works by individualistic painters of the Edo period. which Japanese art historians previously ignored Joe Price began his collection fifty years ago when he visited the shop of an antique dealer with his father’s friend the architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Taken by an ink painting of grapes Joe Price purchased this work by a Japanese painter unknown to him. This artist turned out to be none other than Ito Jakuchu (1716-1800) whose works in recent years have gathered much attention. Today the collection has approximately six hundred works with Jakucho’s paintings at the core of its existence. The name of Etsuko and Joe Price’s collection and foundation Shin’enkan (“The House of the Far Away Heart”) comes from the name of Jakuchu’s studio reflecting Joe Price’s feelings for this artist. The collection however also has many other out- standing works by master painters of the Kamigata (Kansai) region such as Maruyama Okyo (1733-1795) Mori Sosen (1747-1821) known for his paintings of monkeys and deer and Okyo’s exceptional pupil Nagasawa Rosetsu (1754-1799) who stood out for his bold compositions and demonstrated unexpected wit and individualism. The Edo Rimpa paintings in the Price Collection are also worthy of mention. The bold composition of these works are endowed with an exquisite quality which appears like an instant taken from nature and powerfully draws in the viewer. We the organizers are greatly pleased to have been given the wonderful opportu- nity to introduce the quintessence of Edo painting through the Price Collection. Many Japanese today have forgotten how to respect nature and how to see the strength of these unique and expressive works. We hope that visitors to this exhibition will fully enjoy these masterful works which were rediscovered through the eyes of Joe Price. In closing we extend our heartfelt appreciation to Joe and Etsuko Price for gener ously loaning their invaluable works of art for this exhibition which would not have been possible without their support. Our gratitude also goes to our sponsors NEC Corporation and Nipponkoa Insurance Co. Ltd. Finally we thank all our supporters and collaborators. (MP)
