About the book >.>.> So on the platform of Tours railway station which was to be destroyed with so much else in the town in the Second World War Robert awaited me but what did not await me or appear at all for several anxious days was that trunk which I had last seen loaded on the Paris Express. An annoyance as I remember it now but it gave me many hours in that ancient city then more huddled and provincial than the rather grand and spacious one which has been built on its ruins. I had only the most erratic appreciation of church architecture and all I remember of the cathedral is its unusual name St Gatien and some brilliant stained glass in the choir which I learned incredulously was of the thirteenth century. But I have no doubt that as I resumed my slow and rambling journey I counted those days in Tours those hours in tawdry caf?s those long ambition-sharing talks with Robert as yet more ‘experience’ a bonus on that of the whole journey.
