About the book >.>.> As I was finishing this book The Economist came into the news and a journalist rang me to ask for a one-sentence summary of its history. I responded with a hollow laugh before stumbling through a brief narrative. What I should have said was: ‘The Economist was founded in 1843 to campaign for free trade laissez-faire and individual responsibility through the medium of rational analysis applied to facts; its good fortune is that both its principles and its methods remain relevant 150 years later.’ Not that this sound-bite would have kept the interest of this particular journalist: what he really wanted to know was which exciting names had written for the paper over the years and if there were any notable scandals. In this he was at one with many of the staff of The Economist who have been asking me hopefully for years what I have found in the way of sex or violence; until now I have tried to maintain a mysterious silence.
