About the book >.>.> In this era of widespread railway interest it is surprising that the Redruth & Chasewater Railway-better known locally as the Devoran Railway-has not so far been the subject of a small-scale history. Certainly far less interesting and historic lines have had their chronicle published and one comes to the conclusion that the lack of readily available information on its history and working has been the stumbling block to date. Quite why it should be so little known is under- standable when one reflects that Cornwall in the days of the Redruth & Chasewater was not a holiday county as it is now. The line too carried no passenger traffic and was in the days before widespread road transport some- what inaccessible. Moreover it was industrially overshadowed by the mines it was built to serve was owned by a small circle of private shareholders and thus it was always poorly chronicled as a business enterprise in its own right. Nevertheless this 4-foot gauge line-Cornwall’s first true railway-played a considerable and important part in the saga of copper mining in western Cornwall and the publication of its history will perhaps add something useful to our knowledge of the county’s industrial past.
