About the book >.>.> The quotations above are taken from The Radical Programme issued in 1885 by radical members of the Liberal party; they sum- marise accurately the position of and the attitude to the farm-worker during the period of “the Golden Age” of British agriculture. But where the authors of the above passages state “he has no means of helping himself” they are wrong. Farm-workers had from 1871 and 1872 created trade unions. True these unions were in decline by 1885 but they were not dead. It is with the origins and history of these unions in Lincolnshire that this booklet deals. (LL)
