About the book >.>.> When Charles V transferred the government of the Netherlands to his son Philip in 1555 delegates of seventeen provinces of varying size and importance composed the assembly of the States-General at Brussels before which both the old ruler and the new appeared. In the course of Philip’s reign practically the whole of this country rose in revolt but only the seven northern provinces situated beyond the great rivers that run out into the North Sea succeeded in establishing their inde- pendence. An eighty years’ war had to be waged before this independence was unreservedly recognized by Philip’s second successor. In the later stages of this war the seven United Netherlands had taken by force of arms certain portions of the adjoining provinces where in the meantime Spanish rule had been restored. During the lifetime of the Netherlands Republic these districts were administered as subject territory under the name of Generality Lands. To-day the seven provinces and the one-time Generality Lands south of the rivers constitute the Kingdom of the Netherlands to which certain additional districts in the East on the Maas were joined in 1839. The provinces in which Philip II with the resources at his disposal as King of Spain succeeded in putting down the revolt shorn of the acquisitions of the Dutch Republic and of the Dutch Kingdom in the North of the conquests of Louis XIV in the South-West of the larger part of Luxemburg in the South- East but with the addition of the Bishopric of Li?ge after centuries of subjection to successive foreign masters and after a short-lived reunion with the Northern Netherlands form the Kingdom of Belgium as we know it to-day.
