About the book >.>.> The paintings in the Royal Castle in Warsaw constitute one of the most recently amassed museum collections in Poland. The current holdings represent an attempt at reconstructing as far as has been possible the Castle’s original picture gallery assembled by King Stanislaw August Poniatowski in the eighteenth century. The scope of today’s collection has largely been determined by the dispersion and partial loss of the Castle’s historic collections. Fortunately the series of paintings by Marcello Bacciarelli and Bernardo Bellotto have sur- vived and form the core of the present collection. The paintings by these two great masters have been supplemented with paintings acquired after 1971 when the decision was taken to rebuild the Castle. It would not have been possible to achieve our reconstruction without assistance from other museums. The National Museum of Warsaw played a particularly significant role by returning to the Castle the paintings they had safeguarded since World War II and by loan- ing works from their own collections. Private benefactors and various institutions showed their enthusiasm for the rebuilding of the Castle by making generous donations particu larly in the early 1970s. The publication of this catalogue is a tribute to this extraordinary generosity and a record of numerous gifts. (OS)
