About the book >.>.> Throughout the course of its seven-hundred year existence the Royal Castle in Warsaw has played many important roles in the history of the Polish nation. It was originally the castle of the Mazovian dukes before becoming the official residence of successive rulers of the Polish-Lithuanian Republic. Following that it housed the Sejm (parliament) and later became the residence of the President of the Republic of Poland. From the very beginning (right up to the present day) it has always been one of the most important centres of Poland’s cultural and artistic life. For the Poles it has always been a symbol of the state and its sovereignty and a kind of national pantheon – namely the place where the deeds and achievements of Poland’s most illustrious citizens are officially hon- oured. The Castle owes its unique historical status to the events which have taken place there – such as the enactment of the Consti- tution of 3 May 1791 one of the most significant legislative acts in Poland’s history in the Senators’ Chamber. In later years after Poland lost its independence frequent references were made to the Castle’s symbolic role. The aforementioned Senators’ Chamber was the setting for the dethronement in January 1831 of Tsar Nicholas I (who had been crowned King of Poland) by the Sejm. In the years preceding the 1863 January Uprising. (MP)
