About the book >.>.> Once again continuing its tradition the history of the Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze is found merged with the artistic and cultural history of Florence the Tuscan capital. They share a profound concern for the appreciation the safeguarding and the conservation of an artistic and architectural patrimony including works which while remaining outside the mainstream of public attention play an important role in the history of art. On this most recent occasion the bond between the Cassa di Risparmio and the history of Flor- ence grew from the restoration of the Sacrestia delle Messe the sacristy of the Florentine cathedral as described in this volume; and its publication is intended to stimulate interest in this little known treasure. Structurally inspired by Brunelleschi the great architect of Santa Maria del Fiore the decoration of the sacristy was executed with exemplary skill by master woodworkers and joiners. They achieved a perfect synthesis between art and craftsmanship in that lively tradition which to this day still char- acterizes the genius and accomplishments of so many Florentine artisans including those-ideal descendents of the artists of the past-who have so admirably carried out this demanding restoration. The history of the sacristy from its beginning in 1435 is punctuated by innumerable events and natural calamities such as the flood of 1557 and the most recent inundation in 1966 which seriously damaged the precious wood inlay and its underlying support as well.
