About the book >.>.> THIS is the first book so far as I am aware that sets out to tell the British public the story of the Battle of the Atlantic from the enemy’s point of view. Not every British reader will find the author’s presentation of certain events very palatable yet this is an interesting story and particularly to those who took part in the Battle. For nearly two years from October 1940 to August 1942 I was Director of the Anti-Submarine Warfare Division of the Naval Staff at the Admiralty. This was the period in which the U-boats achieved their maximum successes and inflicted on us the destruction of very large numbers of ships and cargoes and an even more terrible loss of lives.
