About the book >.>.> Nathaniel Currier born 1813 opened a shop for himself at no less an address than 1 Wall Street in 1835. He was already an experienced lithographer. This was the beginning and many fine prints were issued with his imprint “N. Currier.” James Merritt Ives came as bookkeeper to a thriving business in 1852 and a few years later entered into partnership with his employer. It was an extraordinary and fortunate association comparable perhaps to Gilbert & Sullivan in the perfect co-ordination of one with the other and the names of the lithographer and the artist-manager are as inseparably bound as those of the poet and the composer. It is natural that a great deal of misunderstanding exists as to the method used in making the prints. Published in coloured form they may easily be taken for chromolithographs that is lithographs printed in colours. However black ink only was used on the stone and the print was coloured by hand afterwards. How soon afterwards depended upon the demand. Should too many have been printed the reverse side was used for a new subject. And so thrift was served and the buyer got two for one. (LL)
