About the book >.>.> MOST students of spiritual literature are intimately acquainted with the doctrine of P?re de Caussade; that abandonment of self into the hands of God so that nothing not even one’s own spiritual state shall ever disturb one’s peace of mind. ‘Divine Providence regulates and arranges everything for our greater good although we usually understand nothing of what it is doing’; this is his first principle. ‘Let us receive everything from the hand of our good Father and he will keep us in peace in the midst of the greatest disasters of this world’; this is his conclusion. It is very obvious; it is nothing very new; it is at the root of the spiritual doctrine of every saint and ascetical writer that has lived. It differs almost in nothing from the ‘Little Way’ of S. Th?r?se of Lisieux; and yet there is an aspect of it a setting an application which gives Caussade’s teaching originality as it does to the teaching of S. Th?r?se. What that teaching is we learn from Caussade’s well-known book Self- abandonment so ably translated by Mr. Thorold; how original it is we may judge from the fact that though others have gone over the same course yet it has never been superseded.
