About the book >.>.> Having followed Lee Jung Ho’s development as a painter since his admittance to the graduate program at Pratt Institute his paintings have continued to reveal an intelligent refinement of surface form. The energy shown in these remarkable paintings appears inexhaustible His evolving precision as an artist has made it clear that he pays close attention not only to how he paints but how thinks in relation to painting. This second attribute reveals the inner-workings of the artist’s pursuit. It suggests a heightened sense of quotient intelligence whereby mathematics intervenes in relation to art. Jung Ho understands that to divide one number by another will produce a third number that will function systemically in relation to the whole. Translated aesthetically the artist divides expressionism through his remarkable grasp of formal analysis that results in an errant version of abstraction. This further incites an obtuse painterly surface that operates independently from a brush. In addition to my observations Jung Ho offers his own perspective what artists nowadays have chosen to call their “intentions.” Whether or not these intentions correspond exactly with my way of seeing his work is scarcely the issue. While there could be a generational difference Jung Ho and I seem to have found a dialogical realm of agreement. By this I refer to a point of view that might be called “aesthetic.” Since being at Pratt I have noticed the artist’s open-mindedness and clarity in conversing intelligently about his work In doing so he maintains an elegant distance relative to understanding his position as an artist. While there are most assuredly cultural differences (as well as generational ones) the focus remains always on art both his art and art-in-general specifically painting. We are both involved in the same struggle to find a comfortable zone where we can share a painterly dialogue with one another. This has been and continues to be one of the most rewarding aspects in working with Jung Ho as an emerging painter from his generation at the current moment. (LL)
