About the book >.>.> In its issue of 8th November the next year the same newspaper reported that “The Squibs were characterised as not being of that brilliancy as displayed in former years and with the exception of the bonfire everything denoted that this annual commemoration was dying away”. What would the writer of that small and pessimistic report have thought could he have foreseen 129 years ahead? Indeed only 12 months later there was little sign of “dying away” for the account said “the 5th was kept up in glorious style the disguises in the streets were more numerous than ever”. There was a bonfire on the Cornhill and the squibbing went on for four hours. (LL)
