About the book >.>.> The study of liturgy and worship has gone through many transformations over the centuries which have broadly followed rather than led the intellectual currents of the day. In the medieval period the focus was on sacramental theology and canon law; in the Reformation era forms of scriptural interpretation made distinctive alterations to the content and leadership of worship; in the nineteenth century the emergence of the scientific method coupled with the discovery and study of new sources from the early Church brought early and Eastern Church traditions to the attention of the Western Church. Also in this century the challenges faced by industrialization urbanization and fears of secularism placed the participation of the people in worship and the provision of appropriate liturgies to the fore; this bore fruit in the twentieth century through the Liturgical Movement and the reforms of Vatican II which were mirrored in most other Western churches. Despite the social impetus for liturgical change the study of worship especially in the training of ministers continued to be based upon the historical origins and development of the liturgical texts; there is nothing wrong with this approach and much useful and interesting work continues to be done on liturgical history but naturally it excludes a whole range of topics many of which are present in this volume. New scholarly methodologies in the social sciences in anthropology in philosophy and linguistics have been adopted by liturgists to add to the already well-developed textual and historical methods. This has refreshed research and teaching. (LL)
