About the book >.>.> THE RETREAT to Dunkirk the last known cavalry charge against a British battery and the rugged fighting across the moun- tain slopes of Keren are some of the early events described in this book. The scene shifts to the siege of Tobruk and the Desert battles of 1941 and 1942; then on to the invasion beaches of Sicily and Italy the mud of the Sangro and the bomb-torn desolation of the long Cassino battles. The later chapters tell of winter warfare in the Apennines and the final months of the war in Holland and Germany. There is also a description of soldiering in Persia and Iraq (PAIFORCE) which should bring back memories to all who served in this little-reported theatre. The Yeomanries of both Surrey and Sussex were formed in the late 18th century. But though they served in- dependently until after the Great War a reorganisation of the Territorial Army in 1921 meant that they entered the Second World War as two combined Field Regi- ments of Surrey and Sussex Yeomanry. It is the story of these two units from 1939 to 1945 that Tom Davis recounts in this 400-page book. It is an involved tale told with understanding and humour which succeeds in presenting an accurate portrait of the Yeomanry in action. It gives a view of war through Yeomanry eyes revealing their constant insistence on high standards and their firm belief in an original and individualistic approach. (SP)
