About the book >.>.> One of the richest fields in which to find examples of the ‘pig symbolic’ is undoubtedly the work of the ecclesiastical carvers of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Illustrations of many of their carvings in cathedrals and churches will be found in this book. A list of important ‘ecclesiastical’ pigs in this country which it is hoped will be of use to anyone who would like to embark on a further study of the subject is given in an Appendix. A less detailed list of some continental church pigs is also provided. Not all the pigs in this book are strictly symbolic. Many have been included for their charm and entertainment value. Among them are the pigs on inn-signs which are necessarily ephemeral and often dependent for their continued existence on the whim of an inn-keeper. The pig has appeared both in comedy and tragedy and has inspired so many writers and painters as well as carvers that selection has been difficult; we the authors can only apologise to those worthy pigs who have been omitted and to their admirers who might reasonably have expected their inclusion. We have provided a simple form of index containing only those references which we feel to be essential. (MP)
