About the book >.>.> Over years of experimentation I have developed my own distinctive embroidery technique my ‘appliqu? art’. I use layers of sheer fabric to build up the background design adding further layers for depth of colour and texture. Over-dyed cottons are then added to create the foreground. I create texture using frayed and ruffled edges but I do not like to use straight lines seams or hems. The pieces are then embellished with motif details often padded with wadding and defined with areas of freehand machine embroidery. Using this technique gives the embroidery an ethereal watery feel; my artworks are often confused with watercolour paintings from a distance. The images are inspired by my native Norfolk and Suffolk coastlines as well as country cottage gardens which conjure up a feeling of nostalgia. When I was first approached by Search Press to write this book I was a busy mum juggling work with young children and the timing just wasn’t right. But ten years later spurred on by the level of public interest in textiles and the resurgence of craft in general it was a different matter. So here it is! A collection of techniques and projects to inspire you to have a go yourself. Just remember… practice makes perfect! Freehand machine embroidery is all about you leading the machine and it is an organic process. (LL)
