About the book >.>.> It is fair to say that this Textile Reader is as concerned with how we write about textiles as it is inter- ested in what we write about textiles. Contributors range from artists and designers to fiction authors and historians. The familiar essay format sits beside interviews lists short stories (some a paragraph in length) artist’s statements and blogs. The content contained within these genres is eclectic with the intention that familiar thinking is placed alongside more contentious approaches. While the range of styles and content included makes it impossible for all the material to be of equal interest to every reader it is my hope that this book makes clear the diversity of voices and styles that are contributing to the emerging academic discipline of textile scholarship. A number of individuals have generously contributed knowledge and resources to this project. A residency at the College of Fine Arts University of New South Wales Australia in 2008 supported by Liz Williamson allowed precious thinking space to begin this project. Vital time and resources to fin- ish the project were provided by Alan Murray head of the School of Design at Edinburgh College of Art. Glenn Adamson Rebecca Earley Sabrina Gschwandtner Alice Kettle David Littler Angela Maddock. Victoria Mitchell Nisha Obano Saron Peoples and Carol Tulloch deserve particular thanks among many others whose suggestions have confirmed that the writing collected here tackles only the tip of the iceberg. Finally Sara Barnes has shown remarkable tenacity in the rather torturous task of helping to clear copyright on the material included. Early in the project I made the editorial decision to include only one example of writing from each contributor. in some cases the choice was difficult to make but my intention throughout has been to capture diversity in both genre and content. Where possible each text is reprinted in its entirety and the format preserved as closely as reasonable to the original publication. This means a range of styles are present: footnotes endnotes no notes! For the same reason British and American spelling is preserved as found in the original. (SP)
