About the book >.>.> William S. Paley founder and guiding spirit of CBS Inc. and for some fifty years a towering figure in the development of the entertainment communications and news dissemination industries was also a commit- ted and enthusiastic collector and patron of the arts of this century. The present volume illustrates and cata- logues a highly personal collection of eighty-four paintings sculptures prints and drawings and in- cludes works by C?zanne Derain Gauguin Matisse Picasso Rouault Toulouse-Lautrec and Vuillard. This collection bequeathed to The Museum of Modern Art constitutes one of the most important transfers of privately owned art to a public institution in recent years. Here all of the works are provided with comprehen- sive catalogue notes along with relevant historical in- formation and comments on the work’s position in relation to modern art movements. The catalogue has been prepared under the direction of William Rubin Director Emeritus of the Department of Painting and Sculpture of The Museum of Modern Art and long- time associate of Mr. Paley. In the mid-1930s as Rubin points out in his Preface to the catalogue there were relatively few collectors of modern art-and nothing chic about possessing it; well-to-do collectors invested in Old Masters. But a taste for modernism came naturally to William Paley whose success was bound up with new technologies. In more personal terms modern paintings in their exploi- tation of liberated color and brushwork provided a kind of emotional immediacy-what Mr. Paley called a “sensuous esthetic delight”-that sorted well with his zest for life. Modernism’s emphasis on private indi- vidual experience marked not only the art that Paley acquired but the way he chose to live with it. (MP)
