About the book >.>.> The Watts Cemetery Chapel is one of the most original and fascinating buildings in Britain. It was the brainchild and magnum opus of Mary Seton Watts wife of the artist George Frederic Watts and forms an important part of a triangular complex in Compton village in Surrey. This consists of Watts Gallery dedicated to preserving and showing the studio collection of Watts the artist and Mary Watts’s chapel and the Arts and Crafts house Limnerslease built for the couple by the architect Ernest George in the early 1890s. It is indeed shocking to read how Pevsner in his influential architectural guide dismissed the chapel out of hand. Shocking too is the lack of scholarship on this Grade I listed building it simply has not had the attention that it deserves. There have always been a small number of devotees but it has lacked a wider audience and the deeper research that it merits. It is gratifying to observe that interest in the chapel has intensified in the last two years with new publications symposia lectures and tours. (SP)
