About the book >.>.> The centre of Atget’s work was Paris the city he loved and in which he lived. He was commissioned by different bodies (including the Biblioth?que Nationale) to document historical buildings and features of the city but he also set himself the task of photo- graphing contemporary aspects of Paris. The collection of his pictures now gathered under the title Modern Times shows us what the flourishing city was like in the first quarter of this century. Caf?s with glinting hardwood chairs shopfronts of all kinds (some with tantalising price lists) serene canals and bustling carnivals dignified domestic interiors and busied streets: he considered all these to be apt subjects for his camera although his photographs never offer any suggestion of intrusiveness. The pictures are also notable for their depictions of people at work and play. Human figures are not seen in a large proportion of Atget’s work but in recording his own times Atget has peopled the streets. John Szarkowski has provided an essay which considers reactions to Atget’s work from the literary enthusiasm of French critics of the 1920s to the continued influence of Atget in the photography of today.
