About the book >.>.> Eug?ne Atget’s abiding interest in Paris was not limited to the urban centre but included the fine ch?teaux and parks of the Ancien R?gime which surround the city. In this selection the most romantic of all his work is to be found. The gardens lakes and architectural details of the great ch?teaux are haunting and moody in winter breaking out into a lush flowering in summer (both literally and metaphorically) as the sun bursts through bushes flowers and foliage back- lighting and hazing scenes full of warmth. Gateways and ponds stairs and tree-lined avenues combine with views of the ch?teaux themselves to show us the French aristo- cracy’s idea of beauty as it has been per- petuated in these marvellous buildings and parks particularly at Versailles Sceaux and Saint-Cloud. John Szarkowski who has supplied the notes for the plates is Director of the Department of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art. Maria Morris Hambourg’s text considers Atget’s work in its entirety in terms both of its order and structure and of its value as a major artistic achievement. It discusses Atger’s changing intentions and methods and reviews his development through a long and unusually consistent career. (MP)
