About the book >.>.> Atget lived from 1857 to 1927. Though in his own lifetime he remained largely unknown his photographs have since influenced a generation of photographers. In this collection of pictures of the city he loved Atget shows us busy shopfronts and imposing domestic facades haunting alleyways and quiet atmospheric interiors as well as small architectural details and ornaments. He also offers his view of the familiar Parisian landmarks. It was the photography of Paris which formed his specialization for most of his career. From the monumental Atget archive at The Museum of Modern Art in New York the very best work has been selected for definitive publication. The plates are printed in three- impression reproduction to achieve the highest possible fidelity to the remarkable tones of the originals. John Szarkowski is Director of the Depart- ment of Photography at The Museum of Modern Art. He has long held a special admiration for the work of Atget. Maria Morris Hambourg provides a biogra phy of the photographer which draws on new research and presents a vivid picture of his character: serious intelligent and sympathetic. There are full notes to the 117 tritone plates. (MP)
