About the book >.>.> The word National is generally associated with activities normally owned or financed by the Government. We have a National Coal Board National Carriers a National Enterprise Board and since 1968 a National Bus Company-titles to indicate such undertakings have no connection with the private sector of industry. The last named was created when it was decided to bring together over fifty separate large omnibus under- takings. These were in the hands of the Transport Holding Company acting on behalf of the British Transport Commission and the British bus interests of the British Electric Traction Company which together formed a new National bus system to be controlled by the new National Bus Company. However the title National does in fact perpetuate a fleet name adopted as long ago as 1909 which has been carried on certain buses without a break ever since. This pioneer concern was the culmination of the personal drive and initiative exerted by its founder entirely from private investment. It later became regionalised bearing the now more familiar fleet names of Eastern National and Western National which in 1969 also embraced the well-known Devon General so that collectively they made a sizeable contribution to the new National Bus Company. Our story here deals with the history and development of the original pioneer National company of 1909 through to the time its descendants became part of the new.
