About the book >.>.> Dance as an art form poses unique philosophical questions. It foregrounds the human body in movement and stasis and human action as the manifest substance of the dancework. Dance challenges us to understand the dynamics of agency and to probe the connection between the dancer’s somatic experience and the viewer’s understanding. Dance works are typically devised through collaborative activity in the studio and not routinely notated; their re-instancing depends at least partly on the physical capacities and bodily training of future generations. So as a performing art which generates repeatable works as well as performance events dance also inflects ontological and identity questions in interesting ways. Furthermore the embodied character of dance works poses questions about the kinds of meanings they generate and indeed the kinds of thinking developed in different sorts of dance activity. These questions become particularly acute as dance forges a space for itself within the academy and begins to test traditional assumptions about knowledge and associated institutional conventions.
