About the book >.>.> The painter writer and poet Thomas Hennell (1903-45) recorded country life in Britain during the 1930s and early 1940s. Towards the end of the Second World War he served as an official war artist in northern Europe and in the Far East where his life ended in mysterious circumstances. Many of the illustrations in this book have been specially photographed to elucidate a text which includes the artist’s account of schizophrenia assembled from his strangely archaistic writings made at about the time he was discharged from hospital in 1935. This carefully documented material has only recently been pieced together. The book also includes a memoir by Basil Gray who knew Hennell from their schooldays together. There is no other biography or critical account of Hennell a diversely talented individual whose intellectual range distinctive mastery of watercolour and beauty of language reveal him to be one of the most significant figures of his time to have remained hitherto virtually unrecognised.
