About the book >.>.> This book is an attempt to illustrate in one volume the range of coachwork mounted on the various Rolls-Royce chassis from the advent of the Silver Ghost in 1907 until motor car production ceased at the outbreak of war in 1939. The fifty-five coachbuilders whose work is illustrated include all the major companies and most of the smaller ones who built bodies for Rolls-Royce chassis. A number had to be omitted as no suitable photographs were available. While compiling this book I have at all times stated facts and not opinions although facts referring to some of the long deceased companies were hard to come by and if opinions have crept in they are not my opinions. Captions to the photographs are mainly type of body chassis and chassis number. The name given to the type of body is usually either the nomenclature of the coachbuilders or of Jack Barclays Ltd. Sedancalette de Ville is I can assure you what Barkers called the bodies they built for new Phantom 27 FH and Phantom II 129 WJ. The dates given are chassis manufacture dates and not completion of body or registration dates. These can vary up to two years in some cases. In reproducing the photographs I have tried to keep all cars proportionate to one another. Therefore all Phantom III’s have similar wheelbases and all are longer than Twenties. The owners where mentioned owned their cars early in 1969 so it is possible that some cars have changed hands since. The initials after their names denote the motoring club of which they are members: MRRC-Midland Rolls-Royce Club; RREC- Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts Club; RROC-Rolls-Royce Owners Club of America; VSCC-Vintage Sports Car Club. The Twenty Ghost Club could not be abbreviated. In the Collocation of Coachbuilders chapter I have used the abbreviation SMMT for the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. It is assumed that the person this book will appeal to will be a Rolls-Royce enthusiast and therefore fairly knowledgable about (MP)
