About the book >.>.> The interviews I conducted for this book took place between March 1995 and March 1996 – more than ten years after Kelly Tarlton’s death but since Kelly died in his prime the majority of his friends and colleagues remain hale in both limb and memory. There are a few contradictions and discrepancies in what some of my interviewees told me but they are caused by the fickleness of memory over a span of 40 years or so; over time some of us play things down while others tend to exaggerate them. However there are many rich and engaging memories on the tapes that form the background to this work. They are memories which are almost always kindly for it was difficult to find anyone who did not consider himself or herself to have been Kelly’s friend. It is sad that a tragic commercial diving accident in 1983 has deprived us of the reminiscences of one of the closest of them Pete Oselton who was involved in many of Kelly’s diving exploits. What follows is by way of an introduction to the real authors of this book many of whom would be deserving of biographies of their own.
