About the book >.>.> The book began as a project for a joint paper on the processes and the interest of a painter’s repre- sentational intelligence as being rather different from say a writer’s: but still representational intel- ligence. Behind this lay a set of concerns about what we feel is a depreciation – in some current modes of academic art criticism of the visual medium involved. We wanted to write a case study not a general argument and Tiepolo seemed a good case to take both because of our liking for his very intelligent pictures and because we knew nothing about him: the intention was to address painting directly and ahistorically without re- ference to circumstances and context. The project inflated and complicated itself and Tiepolo became more autonomously the centre – in fact took over. But although we have done some basic reading on and occasionally around Tiepolo the book is still concerned to locate his visual quality as directly as possible and is not seen as a contribution to set- tecento scholarship (SP)
