About the book >.>.> Development of plans for a German heavy tank began in 1937 and a few prototypes were produced. Prior to the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 efforts to accelerate the program were initiated. The need was confirmed by encounters with Soviet T34 and KV tanks. Priorities were for thick armour protection and a powerful gun. The accepted design incorporated much of the work done on the prototypes. The tank’s official designation changed considerably over its life but it is best known simply as the ‘Tiger I’. Its main armament was the 8.8cm KwK 36 L/56 developed from Krupp’s famous anti-aircraft piece; two machine guns were also carried. Armour was up to 100mm thick on the nose driver’s plate and gun mantlet. (SP)
