About the book >.>.> While the discusion of the export of Dutch tiles to Germany and Denmark and of the Indigenon manufacture of these countries is the work of Sigurd Schoubye. For the highly informative chapter on materials and methods of production we have to thank Jan Tichelaar proprietor of the Makkum factory There will probably be no objection to the fact that in view of the comprehensive intention of the book a number of illustrations of tiles have been inchaded which may almost be regarded as folk-art for the charm of the primitive and untutored is much prized today. Moreover these are tiles which the collector may still from time to time obtain for reasonable prices. Repro-ductions of such specimens will be found side by side with illustrations of the more distinguished wares of the Dutch factories. This is one of the reasons why the chapters on Dutch tiles are more profusely illustrated than some of the others another reason for this arose from our desire to provide an accurate impression of the many blues and mauves which are found on tiles and for this purpose the Dutch tiles are the most suit able. A third reason is that Dutch wares were highly influential in the international development of tiles and most compelling of all that they show a partic ularly wide variety of decoration. The tiles of the Per-sian mosques of the palaces and pools of Spain and Portugal may have been more impressive than the wares of the Netherlands but this is due to the fact that these were large-scale compositions. In a book about tiles as such however the individual piece is. important and it was principally these which were pro duced in the Netherlands. Except for purposes of export to Spain or Portugal or to a lesser extent for certain tile-decorated rooms in other foreign countries the tiles produced in the Netherlands were primarily individual.
