About the book >.>.> Until far into the latter part of the last century it was believed that there were a great many Titian drawings still extant. It was especially those extensive and detailed landscapes usually of heroic character that were traditionally considered the best. A decided change was brought about by Morelli. Without much ado he decided that these landscape compositions so long admired could not be attributed to the master but to his imitator Domenico Campagnola to whom up till then little attention had been paid’. Below is given a brief discussion of the extent to which this change which has found almost general favour may be credited. First the importance of Morelli’s step must be emphasised. By a resolute perhaps even brutal division a con-fused mass of mediocre school compositions were separated from those of the master and thus the way cleared for a better comprehension of the subject. On the other hand Morelli was not able to make any positive con-tribution to research. His remarks on the few drawings which he considered original Titians were too casual. In some cases they were not even definite enough to enable an identification of the drawings which Morelli had in mind. (OS)
