About the book >.>.> Once again we have decided to present a monographic exhibition in the British Pavilion. After showing two of our most distinguished painters in successive Biennales we have chosen one of our leading sculptors to represent Britain at the XLIIIrd Biennale. Tony Cragg may by familiar to visitors to other international events such as Documenta and has already had important museum and gallery exhibitions in Europe and America but almost all the work in this exhibition is being shown for the first time. A few earlier pieces and the catalogue itself serve to underline the essential continuity in the artist’s approach to his subjects but we intend that the display should evoke a fresh and imme- diate response from the viewer. Cragg conjures up a myriad of images in a multitude of materials which delight intrigue and test our reactions. I am indebted to the members of our Fine Arts Advisory Committee and its Chairman Sir Alan Bowness for advice over the selection of the artist and stex-scope of the work to be present- ed. The generosity of those who have lent pieces from their own collections is warmly appreciated and I thank them for helping us to assemble this exciting selection of Tony Cragg’s sculpture. Their names are listed on page 41. I should also like to thank the following for their part in the realisation of the exhibition: Thomas Backhaus and Joe Holmes Tony Cragg’s studio assistants; Nicholas and Caroline Logsdail and the staff of the Lisson Gallery London; David Ricks the British Council’s Representative for Italy in Rome; and Anthony Smallwood Annamaria Campari and Elena (LL)
