About the book >.>.> The 1950s may well be called the ‘forgotten decade’ but for a whole generation these were the years in which the austerity of wartime blossomed into the optimism of the New Elizabethan era. The effects of the war were finally dispelled: rationing came to an end bombed-out buildings were rebuilt dance halls sprang up reverberating to the beat of popular music and more and more cars filled the streets. Having overcome the dark years of war people were determined to have fun. As the 1960s dawned bulldozers were transforming the physical nature of the townscapes. Old ways gave way to the new often with change for change’s sake but there was an over- whelming feeling that all change was for the better. These superb photographs many of them from the archives of Torquay Museum will it is hoped bring back many memories for those who were there and remind others of how Torbay has been transformed in the fifty years since the pictures were taken.
