About the book >.>.> The exhibition Tracey Emin 20 Years celebrates the work of one of Britain’s best-known but least under- stood artists. Despite Emin’s fame she has never had a retrospective exhibition in a UK museum and because of her notoriety she has attracted more press gossip than serious critical analysis. Her work has been seen in gallery exhibitions (notably at White Cube in London) and in mixed shows but never in depth and never across her whole career. She has worked with an extraordinary range of dif- ferent materials and techniques including painting sculpture film neon installations performance monoprints texts appliqu? and embroidery and this exhibition will demonstrate that a consistent way of thinking a consistent passion and energy runs throughout her work whatever her chosen medium. It is a common misconception that Emin’s work is uniquely concerned with sex: that is cer- tainly one of her subjects but there are a great deal more including her family pregnancy mental and emotional states and an uncommon variety of subjects ranging from gardening to toothache. There are only a few artists who can literally make the viewer’s jaw drop and Emin is one of them. What is more she has tapped into the mainstream of public consciousness and has made art which connects to people in a direct and visceral way. Tracey Emin merits a major retrospective and we are delighted that this will take place in Edinburgh. (SP)
