Rockefeller 3rd Collection of Asian Art which forms the basis of the permanent collection of the Asia Society Galleries New York has long been known to specialists and enthusiasts of Asian art throughout the world. Universally described as ‘gemlike and comprising masterpieces from cultures stretching from Pakistan to Japan and Java the Rockefeller Collection manages to coalesce two seemingly contradictory principles of collecting. Although broad in scope it was assembled with the utmost concern for the aesthetic quality of individual works. Compared with other privately formed collections of Asian art now in the public domain the Rockefeller collection is quite small: with 285 objects it is far more modest in size than other well-known collections such as those assembled by Charles Lang Freer and Avery Brundage. Yet it would be unthinkable to overlook the Rockefeller Collection as one of the most notable collections of Asian art in the United States primarily because of the high proportion of acclaimed masterpieces.
