About the book >.>.> Throughout the history of the world’s arts and crafts the creation of glass and ceramic vessels has been seen as one of man’s supreme artistic achievements. Yet it is only during this century that the common domestic bottle has been regarded as an object capable of inspiring aesthetic appreciation and admiration. An early champion of bottle collecting Emma Carleton wrote in 1902: “Bottles as congenial aesthetic companions gravitate into fit arrangements upon close acquaintance as easily and readily as familiar friends around hearth in studio or library… “Considered singly or blended in a collection the bottle antique or curious proves itself to have great resources for entertainment and artistic gratification…” This lyrical tribute came just two years after a budding interest in American bottles found expression in a slim volume on early USA flasks. Bottle collecting in America attracted devotees long before it became one of the country’s leading hobbies in the Fifties. The most notable aficionado was the late Charles B. Gardner who started serious bottle collecting in the Twenties. His famous collection went under the auctioneer’s hammer in America in 1976 and realised in excess of ?1 million. The hobby has enjoyed wide- spread popularity in Australia for many years but in Britain and other parts of Europe it has emerged as a prominent and profitable pastime only in the last ten years.
