About the book >.>.> Throughout his life Turner was profoundly in- fluenced by the eighteenth-century aesthetic theory of the ‘Sublime’. Both his early works and many of his mature masterpieces were conceived in terms of the principles of vision and feeling which it laid down. However as Andrew Wilton now shows the Sublime was not merely a spring- board for Turner’s innovations; he reinterpreted the theory with great individualism and offered it to the world as a fresh and even more wide- reaching philosophy of art. In reassessing Turner and the Sublime Andrew Wilton first traces the history of the theory in eighteenth-century thought and examines the ways in which Turner absorbed it during his training and early experiments in oil painting. He goes on to explore Turner’s use of the Sublime for his own personal ends in his maturity and later life. The 140 illustrations which include 32 in colour reproduce watercolours and prints which demonstrate the development of Turner’s re- sponse to the Sublime in areas as various as Archi- tecture the Picturesque the ‘Terrific’ the Sea Cities Mountains and Lakes. Many of the subjects have not previously been published. ANDREW WILTON is Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Yale Center for British Art New Haven and was formerly Assistant Keeper in the Department of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum. He was joint organiser of the Turner Bicentenary Exhibition at the Royal Academy and also mounted the companion show of Turner in the British Museum in 1975. He is the author of Turner in Switzerland (with John Russell). (MP)
