About the book >.>.> Twentieth-Century Still-Life Paintings from The Phillips Collection follows in a series of pro jects that focuses on the fascinating collecting history of Duncan and Marjorie Phillips. The paintings in this exhibition reflect more than half a century of changing attitudes toward style and subject and they offer a rich melange of visual interpretations of the objects that fill our lives. They remind us that beauty and things that offer special plea sures surround us always but we tend to take them for granted. The artist’s isolates eye distills and releases them from the visual cacaphony of everyday life. In these paintings we discover that the ordinary is special and the common is worthy of our attention. As a result we find meaning and enjoyment in objects that might have gone unnoticed. I would like to express my gratitude the the curatorial team that organized and coordi nated the exhibition especially Eliza Rathbone chief curator and Stephen Bennett Phillips assistant curator for administrative affairs whose unfailing dedication to every detail of this exhibition and publication has been crucial to the success of the project. Among the other staff members who contributed significantly are Thora Colot Faith Flanagan Johanna Halford-MacLeod Joseph Holbach William Koberg Kristin Krathwohl Katherine Rothkopf Kimberly Schmeits Karen Schneider Elizabeth Steele Pamela Steele Elizabeth Hutton Turner and Shelly Wischhusen. In addition special thanks are due to Polly Franchine who designed the catalogue and Ellen Cochran Hirzy who edited the text.
