About the book >.>.> I WAS BORN IN MARYLEBONE London on 7th May 1929 nearly two years after my sister Sanie. We lived in St John’s Wood and had a country cottage in West Sussex. My father Kenneth Walker was a physician and much preoccupied with his practice in Harley Street and also with writing books. My mother was often away travelling abroad. Thus though I had a normal middle class upbringing I saw perhaps less than usual of my parents and was looked after by a series of nursery maids Norland nurses nannies and governesses. Under their care I attended several different schools some progressive some less so. It was our German governess Irma Bissing who accompanied us on our first holiday abroad in the summer of 1938. She took us to Bavaria and W?rtemburg where I was attracted by the smart uniforms flags and daggers of the Hitler Youth and longed to join them. Being an ardent Nazi herself Irma encouraged this enthusiasm in me but alas I was too young to join. Early in 1939 she left our service. She had been found borrowing the family car apparently with the aim of organising transport from Sussex to London for German troops whom she expected to invade and occupy England soon after war broke out. She had been aided in this by a local garage owner. A more suitable French governess was engaged and took us camping in Brittany during the summer of 1939.
