About the book >.>.> The term “ranger” or “raunger” is found in England as early as 1455 according to the Oxford English Dictionary describing one who is “a forest officer a gameskeeper.” In the North Amer-ican colonies it was defined as “a body of mounted troops or other armed men employed in ranging over a tract of country.” Colonies had a defensive screen of forts and block houses that could never be totally effective against infiltrating Indians. The solution was the employment of small mobile forces that ranged or patrolled the frontier. In chapter 1 of this book we have attempted to present a brief history of those units which performed Ranger missions even if they were not called Rangers. Ranger missions are special light infantry military operations such as strike opera tions usually deep penetration including raids interdictions and recovery. Rangers may also do reconnaissance and security missions such as taking and holding an enemy airfield for use by US forces. Thus Col. Benjamin Grierson’s command is included but some Confederate Ranger units are not. Due to the limited nature of this book not all Ranger units operating in colonial and early na tional period America are mentioned. Chapters 2 and 3 cover the Ranger Training Brigade and the 75th Ranger Regiment respec tively. We have tried to convey an idea of present day Ranger life and training in these sections. (MP)
