About the book >.>.> Contemporary art has indubitably become a principal protagonist on the international cultural scene. In Russia growing media interest an increased number of exhibitions the success of specialized tradefairs and the very fact that the second Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art is taking place all show that the public is also becoming more and more receptive and attentive to it. To face this growing demand the Contemporary City Foundation – founded two years ago to carry out programs supporting young Russian curators – has realized a project that gives young contemporary Russian. artists a chance to make their voices heard. These nine artists made their contributions throughout 2005-2006 conceiving of pieces specific to a very challenging venue all deeply convinced that contemporaneity is a laboratory of sorts. Thanks to the Moscow Biennale as well as to the assistance and enthusiasm of the Moscow Museum of Contemporary Art we now have the opportunity to show all these projects together joining them into one unified narrative. However we feel that it is equally important for the exhibition to leave a material palpable trace. Thanks to a cooperation with the Interros Publishing Program it has become possible for us to pub- lish the book “Urban Formalism.” It is our hope that this attractive open publication will provide its readers with an immediate experience of the most relevant contemporary art in Russia today serving as a guidebook that is more and more urgently needed as the interested audience grows. We all need to acknowledge that this book is about us about our time and that “contemporaneity” makes equal all men and women in the world: in the end we are all contemporaries. This is why contempo- rary art has to be a common language a language for our present. (SP)
